Broadchurch – Mini Review

It’s been one hell of a week – I’ve been living at my aunt’s house, writing and doing things for school, watching series and going out and tragically, never being able to finish a book. I’m still in the middle of Goblet of Fire (I hope to finish it this weekend) and have just finished watching the first season of Broadchurch with my mum and we are absolutely stunned – so here’s a small review!

In the small town of Broadchurch in Dorset, everybody knows everybody knows everybody. And this makes it all the more complicated for Detective Ellie Miller to investigate the murder of 11 year old Danny Latimer, and the new detective from out of town who doesn’t understand the town and its people one bit. In a town where everyone seems to have something to hide and the Latimer family can’t find peace until they’ve successfully hunted down the murderer of their beloved son – it was someone they know, someone they trust and was close to their son…

Let me just start like this: if you like Great Britain, you are in for a treat. If you like crime and mystery, you are in for a treat. And finally, if you love Harry Potter, you are in for a treat – brace yourself for Mr. Filch, yours truly, and Barty Crouch Junior (here the good cop, took some readjustment time for me).

The story line is absolutely incredible – I don’t think I’ve ever watched a more complex, thought-through crime series where it could have been everyone (and not in a very “oh let’s throw in a motive here and another there” kind of way. It’s done in a thorough, believable way). The characters are very dimensional, you will encounter tragedies to tear up, empathize and just have your heart ripped out. It is a very emotional series – the murder of an 11 year old in a town where everyone’s practically grown up with each other and the family now has to suspect even their closest friends.

Next, the very British aspect was TO DIE FOR: I mean the town of Broadchurch reminded me so much of the coast near Brighton (it feels like I never left), the town itself was adorable beyond recognition and of course, the British mindset gets my mood flying through the ceiling every day and I can’t wait for this situation to be over – I’m the first to fly across Europe and land straight in Heathrow.

This was only the first season: eight episodes, 45 min each – and the murderer is caught at the end, currently watching the second season (trial, etc).

Recommendable because of the intense story line and 100% Britishness!
