Top Ten Tuesday: books on my TBR I’m avoiding & why

It’s Tuesday, the last school-free day for me! So let’s make this a good one! I’ll be listing all the books that are still on my TBR (and will remain there for another while) because I’m avoiding them!

#1 The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I have been avoiding this book for MONTHS now, even though I was absolutely eager to own it. Fact is: I don’t want to destroy the holy picture which I have created in my mind. I’m picturing this amazing book with a suspenseful story, a great mystery and amazing characters. I’m simply afraid that it won’t live up to my expectations.

#2 A Torch against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

Same here: after finishing An Ember in the Ashes last fall, I’m just scared that the series won’t continue as amazing as I’m picturing it.

#3 Renegades by Marissa Meyer

I have this picture of Marissa Meyer’s The Lunar Chronicles in my head and I’m thinking super highly of her as an author right now. And I wan’t to believe further that I love everything I’ve read of her – and I have heard so many mixed reviews about this series: some say that this was one of the best series they’ve ever read and others think that after reading The Lunar Chronicles, you’ll be utterly disappointed.

#4 Enchantée by Gita Trelease

I have the feeling that I haven’t read a YA book in quite a while and therefore I’m just not very sure which one I should start with again. And this might be a risk… And I feel like I don’t know very much about the plot, and that’s an issue.

#5 A Shakespeare play

I have been wanting to read some Shakespeare play forever now (I haven’t actually dealt with the fact that I don’t know which one to start with). But I’m afraid that I’ll hate it because it’s too difficult and complicated to read, that it’s too old and that I’ll end up choosing the wrong one to start with – and the anxiety is building up haha.

#6 Prince Charming by Rachel Hawkins

I recently read The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren and that’s the reason I’m avoiding this – I don’t want another simple contemporary story. The other book was great for the summer, but now I don’t want to read just a cheesy and cute story – so it’ll remain on my TBR for some time longer.

#7 On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

I loved The Hate U Give and now I’m simply scared that Angie Thomas’ new book won’t live up to the expectations I have because her previous work was so brilliant.

#8 A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

This book sounds super awesome because it’s a retelling, but I’m just anxious because it’s a retelling – will it still be good, will it be as good as Winter or Cress?

#9 How Democracies Die by Steven Levitsky & Daniel Ziblatt

Finally, here’s a non-fiction, educational book. It sounds amazing. I would love to have the knowledge of what’s in it. But I’m afraid I’ll stop reading because I have so much other things going on and then don’t want to waste my free time reading educational things.

#10 YA Fantasy

I feel like the times where I only read YA fantasy are starting to end – don’t get me wrong, I’ll still love it and will also continue reading it. But not only YA fantasy.

  1. Well I recently read The Night Circus, (I was avoiding it too!) and I don’t know that it quite fits your description. It’s more slow paced and the reader knows more about the mystery from the start than the two characters. It’s good if your looking for something whimsical, atmospheric and a little romantic.

    I also enjoyed Renegades and I had never read Meyer before that! You should give it a try!

  2. I know what you mean, there’s so many books that have been so hyped up I’m scared to even try them!!

    I’ve only read one Shakespeare play but I liked it. It’s called The Taming of the Shrew, idk if you’ve ever seen 10 Thins I Hate About You but that movie was actually based off of the play!

    I hope all of these live up to the hype for you💜💜💜

    1. Yes, everyone hyping a book just makes it more scary to read!
      And OMG I love 10 things I hate about you, you’re making me want to watch it right now haha
      and no, I’ve actually never heard of that play, but since the movie was based on it, I’ll keep it in mind if I ever overcome my fear of reading Shakespeare haha!

  4. Haha looks like we have similar reasons for Ember of the Ashes (and the sequel in your case)..I’m just so scared because everyone loves it…
    I’ve never read Shakespeare either and I don’t know if I ever will.. i don’t wanna hate it just coz I don’t understand it 😂😂
    Hope you do get to read these books though and love them 😊😊😊

      1. I also forgot to mention that I read about 35% of How Democracies Die and it’s so scary, I couldn’t continue… its wonderfully researched though and I hope you’ll decide to read it 😊😊😊
