First Impressions: Circe

This book has been on my summer TBR list forever and I’m super happy that I finally got around to start it – quite some time after everyone else, but eventually, I always come around! Here are my first thoughts!

From the moment the cashier told me I should consider buying this book because it was her favorite, I knew that it must be special. Yet how special, I couldn’t fathom.

Everything about this book is different from every other book I have ever read – this is, I suppose, the best summary I can give you.

I have read Percy Jackson in my earlier days, so I have some knowledge about the gods, meaning I’m not in a constant state of confusion which I feared I’d be in. However, this book gives you in no way near the feeling Percy Jackson gave me when I read about gods – in a good way. This book is marvelous.

The whole world of the gods adds such a great twist to this story, the characters and their mentality and I was not equipped for that. Together with the writing, it creates a special atmosphere which you can only difficultly detach yourself.

The writing itself is simply beautiful. They are, in my opinion, always writers which either convince me because of their great writing style or because of their amazing plot – but Madeline Miller has the strange gift of both.

The story itself, after 70 pages, has begun to establish itself up to the point where Circe is now on the deserted island. It took quite some time to develop itself, with many little aspects which could have been displayed in a boring way, but weren’t.

The first chapters were told like you tell tales, which had a magical effect. I cannot describe this any better than saying it sounded like a tale – but if you felt the same way, you’ll understand.
