Top Ten Tuesday: Things that make me pick up a book

What an interesting idea! Everyone has certain criteria when it comes to picking up books and I’m really hoping I can find ten that match me haha! About the meme: Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish, but is now moved to That Artsy Reader Girl!

#1 an intriguing synopsis

I mostly only go by this rule. If I don’t think I wish I could read this book right now after reading the back of a book, then I don’t consider buying it. This applies to all the books on my TBR list: the day minutes of adding them, I want to read them 100%, then, however, forget about them until I recall I need a new book.

#2 an interesting cover

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

I know, everyone says this and IT’S TRUE, but when I’m in a bookstore and I find a pretty YA book, I immediately read the synopsis. If the book looks lame, there’s a 50% smaller chance of me picking it up.

#3 a good review

When a blogger friend of mine who almost always has the same taste in books and positively discusses a book, I almost always add it to my TBR list. It has to be the right genre, tho.

#5 certain plot lines

I have certain plot lines that I absolutely adore. Certain tropes that feature hundreds of books I read.

  1. The Chosen One: Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, Red Queen
  2. Gangs (friends solving mysteries or something): Six of Crows, Silver, Famous Five
  3. Teenagers with awesome abilities (assassins, fighters etc.): Six of Crows, Red Queen, Shadow and Bone
  4. Magic: Harry Potter, Shadow and Bone, Red Queen, Throne of Glass, Black Blade

#4 hype on the internet

It’s not ideal, I understand. I tend to get disappointed because people hype up a book and then it doesn’t live up to my expectations aka Truly Devious (the ending was EXTREMELY unsatisfying) or Turtles all the way down (which comes over really positive in my review, but I have grown since.)

#6 the author

I’m that type of girl that reads books because of the authors. That can mean a couple of things.

  1. I read another book by the same author and therefore give the book a try (John Green would be the perfect example)
  2. and this is the most common case: another author’s comment is written on a book that I enjoyed (for example Victoria Aveyard commented on The Cruel Prince – this was actually the main reason I bought this book haha)
  3. the author got nominated for a prize recently
  4. my parents recommend the author

#7 a sale

When books are on sale, I don’t think as much if it’s the ideal book for me. Because of that, I have rather many books that I know I will probably not read for some time. However, this only applies to books being discounted from 9.99$ to 2.99$. That’s awesome.

#8 my friends read the book

I don’t have many friends who actually read, hardly any to be honest, and so when they read a book and enjoyed it, it must mean something.

#9 someone I look up to reading the book

The perfect example is Emma Watson. She offen posts pics featuring her reading a book and I often want to find out more afterwards. It’s the same with Victoria Aveyard (even more here, as she also ready YA).

#10 a display in a bookstore

Bookstores often have certain displays of new books or new editions which always interest me. For example the recent 20 year Harry Potter displays all over the world where people went CRAZY.

That’s my list of all the things that make me pick up books! I hope you enjoyed this small post and have a great day!

Author: Blogger Books

I'm a huge fan of Draco Malfoy, I love scones and tea time, I don't like horror movies and obviously I'm a huge book nerd.

  2. Awesome post! Your answers are so relatable hahaha I love #9 about the people you look up to. Emma is amazing with her book choices! I definitely agree with so many on your list – the synopsis, cover, review, hype, author and recommendations. Ooooo the bookstore display is an interesting choice but I can totally see that! Sometimes the way they place their books on display, especially new releases, are so eye catching that you are automatically intrigued! Great post btw! 🙂

I’m so sorry I’m always late to checking out your blog… I don’t know what’s wrong with my notifications but I never get notified for a new post from you 😦 Anyways, great post!!! honestly agree with all of these, sometimes I read a book just cos my friend recommended it and didn’t even check out the blurb, just glanced at the title and cover and dove in 😂 also I see you’ve started Persuasion and Northanger Abbey – SO EXCITED TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS!!! 👏😊
